  • Remember this portrait (below)?  We are grateful to Toby Mason for sending it to us.   :^)
Mighty Moo was, unfortunately, painted over when the school was repainted (no one had told the painters that Moo should remain unmolested).  For extra credit: attach classmates’ names to the artists’ initials.

  1. After we were busted by the MCPD and they confiscated all our paint on Senior Night, we had to start all over again. So I went around to classmates offering to put their initials on the chimney for a 50 cent donation. My file on who went with the initials, after 50 years, has been misplaced at the moment, but here is what I know for sure (!) and what I think (?) are the names that go with the initials. If you paid up and are not given credit here, please speak up, if it won’t break your parole. Without you this historic project could not have been completed.

The Artists, of course, were at the top of the list, and we decided to put them diagonally so that, as much as possible, there was no hierarchy. Somewhere in the list is the initials of our evil vice principle, whom we wanted to implicate if we were once again rounded up.

Thanks to Toby for the photo. Apparently you weren’t one of the contributors.

    • I don’t really think about this escapade too much except every 5, 10, or 25 years when it comes up, so it’s reasonable that I would get some of the minor details wrong with the first draft. This is for the history buffs:

Senior Night, of course, was when we Artists skipped Senior Night and went out the 2nd floor window onto the roof. We were merely “priming” the surface of the chimney with shellac, covering the primitive work left by the Class of ’62.

It was the following night, I believe, that we should have been working our craft but first took a detour with the VW across the football field and up and down the slopes. Whee!

Boy does that alert the cops.

“Calling all cars! Calling all cars! There’s a carload of idiots at WJ!” With only two exits, did you know you can’t outrun a dozen squad cars?

      • Dave Hill says:

Just this year I told the story of the cow on the chimney to my 14 year old grandson. I was was astounded that my account was just like George’s.
I’m a naturalized Californian, having lived here for many, many years.

Creating this site has been a delight! Thank you for sharing your memories, George. :^D

  3. Eve Church says:

    From Richard Charles:

I remember Senior Skip Day and Carol Crawford wasn’t allowed to skip….bummer!!

Lee Trunnell and Joyce Fresh and I went to the beach without
    her…double bummer!

Life is good, God is worthy…college, 4 years in Navy with 2 tours to Vietnam, great wife, 2 daughters, 6 grands!! And retired, to boot!

    Life is very good!!

  4. lee trunnell says:

I CONCUR WITH RICHARD’S MEMORY OF SENIOR SKIP DAY. CAROL’S DAD WAS VERY CONCERNED ABOUT HER COLLEGE ADMISSION (EVEN THOUGH SHE HAD ALREADY BEEN ACCEPTED) AND DID NOT WANT ANY BLEMISH ON HER RECORD (IT’S FAR DIFFERENT NOW). WE WENT TO BAY RIDGE AND RAN IN TO A FEW OTHER SKIPPERS, BUT THE ONES I CAN REMEMBER BEING THERE WERE TOM COLEMAN AND SHELLY ALEXANDER. AT LEAST CAROL AVOIDED THE JELLYFISH.

  5. lee trunnell says:

THE FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND WRESTLING TEAMS ALL WON COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS. AT THE NORTHWOOD GAME (WHICH WE HAD TO WIN IN ORDER TO WIN THE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP) I REMEMBER WATCHING BARRY IRWIN SCORING ON A LONG TOUCHDOWN RUN IN THE SECOND HALF. AFTER WATCHING HIM CROSS THE GOAL LINE I LOOKED BACK AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE AND SAW THREE NORTHWOOD LINEMEN STILL LAYING ON THE GROUND. TWO OF THEM FINALLY GOT UP, WHILE THE THIRD ONE HAD TO BE HELPED OFF THE FIELD. GREAT JOB OFFENSIVE LINE.

  6. Tom Lucas says:

After Walter Johnson I worked for a year before enlisting in the Marine Corps. After six years in the Marines, including a one year tour in Danang, Vietnam with the III MAF, I entered the industrial security profession, and ended up as a correctional officer in Montgomery County, Maryland. While working in corrections, I established my own locksmith business, and eventually resigned from corrections when I won the bid to re-key Dulles Airport. I worked there for three months re-keying the entire airport. It eventually provided other contracts to support my new business. These contracts brought me business from the Nat. Archives, U.S.Courthouse, the Carter Barron Amp. Theater, and a cross section of famous people in the DC Metro areas.

I have served as Chair of The American Society for Industrial Security International, and VP of The DC Area Locksmith’s Assn. for three terms. I obtained the designation of “Certified Registered Locksmith” several years ago, and now have become one of the first licensed locksmiths in this area. This is something the Governor has made mandatory in the Maryland area recently. I am also a member of the Associated Locksmith’s of America International Assn. of Security Professionals, and the International Assn. of Investigative Locksmiths.

Staying in shape has been a life long endeavor, and I have tried to keep up the workouts, but I no longer participate in my once favorite sport of martial arts.

Reading current events, and new Vietnam history books on my Nook e reader is my passion, as well as baseball. Magic and woodworking are a close second to reading. When I have a chance, I make Shaker furniture. I still play jazz drums, but don’t have enough time to really get into it like I used to. I recently hooked up with Jack Bryant, of the Fallen Angels fame, who used to be lead guitar with my band, the Viscounts in the late 50’s and early 60’s.

I have a 3 1/2 year old grandson, and spend week ends with him.

Recently, my wife and I vacationed at Myrtle Beach and I hooked up with a Marine buddy I hadn’t seen in 50+ years who lived 1 1/2 hours from our hotel. I found him on http://www.tws.com after a few days of searching. He served at 8th & I in DC, with The Presidents Own when we were in the Marine Corps. I found another buddy that I served with in Vietnam on the same site. It was wonderful to see and hear both of the Marines I served with so many years ago.

I hope to rekindle some of the friendships I had at WJ when I attend the 50th reunion. See ya there.

  7. John Sonnen says:

I remember Mr. Chauncey Ford who taught Economic Geography. He made it interesting, and inspired me to be a Geography teacher. That was my first career, but did not last long because of the low pay.

I remember Col. Craig who taught Geometry. He emphasized logic and logical thinking to solve problems and to examine riddles.

I remember Mr. Stout who taught American History. He had a passion about the subject that was infectious (in a good way).

I remember good friends and innocent times. Alas, I have forgotten many names, but the friendships were a major “Positive” feeling of enjoying my Walter Johnson years.

I remember enjoying plays and musical concerts, but I do not remember the names of the music teachers nor the drama teachers. I was a stage hand for a couple of the plays, one of which was “Finian’s Rainbow.”

  8. lee trunnell says:

I REMEMBER WHEN MISS HARDER TOOK THE CONCERT CHORUS TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND FOR A CRITIQUE OF VARIOUS SCHOOL CHORUSES FROM AROUND THE COUNTY AND STATE. THERE WERE AT LEAST 3 (MAY BE 4) JUDGES LISTENING TO GRADE ON BALANCE, HARMONY, SOUND (WRONG NOTES), FOLLOWING THE DIRECTOR, ETC. A COUPLE OF WEEKS LATER SHE RECEIVED THE CRITIQUES, BUT BEFORE SHE COULD START READING THE RESULTS A COUPLE OF THE FOOTBALL PLAYERS IN THE CHORUS (YES THEY COULD SING AS WELL AS PLAY FOOTBALL) CALLED OUT TO HER “ROOKIE”(EVIDENTALLY THEY HAD NOTICED HOW NERVOUS SHE WAS BEFORE WE STARTED SINGING-THEY EVEN SAW HER SHAKING). IN ANY CASE THAT BROUGHT LAUGHTER THROUGHOUT THE ROOM. EVIDENTALLY, WE MUST HAVE BEEN “RIGHT ON” AT THE CRITIQUE BECAUSE FROM ALL BUT ONE OF THE JUDGES WE GOT NOTHING BUT VERY POSITIVE REVIEWS INCLUDING ONE THAT SAID “YOUR BOYS SANG” (IF THEY DON’T THERE IS LITTLE HARMONY OR BALANCE). THE LAST JUDGE WAS SOMETHING ELSE AS HIS HIGHEST PRAISE WAS “NOT BAD”. I THINK WE DECIDED HE WAS HAVING A BAD DAY, NOT US.

I DID SEE MISS HARDER AGAIN AFTER GRADUATION WHEN I TOOK A TOUR OF THE THEN NEWLY OPENED MORMON TEMPLE IN SILVER SPRING WHEN THEY WERE OFFERING PUBLIC TOURS. SHE WAS ONE OF WHAT WE WOULD HAVE CALLED DURING SCHOOL DAYS A HALL MONITOR.

OTHER TEACHERS AND COACHES REMEMBERED: CHAUNCEY FORD (ECONOMICS-ALSO INTRODUCED US TO ROBERT HAYES OF FLORIDA A & M WHO LATER BECAME THE FASTEST MAN IN THE WORLD AFER WINNING THE 100 METER SPRINT IN THE 1964 OLYMPICS, THEN BECAME A WIDE RECEIVER FOR THE DALLAS (YUK) COWBOYS), JESSE SNOWDEN (ENGLISH-THE REASON I KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT F. SCOTT FITZGERALD-EVEN VISITED HIS GRAVE SITE IN THE OLD ROCKVILLE CEMETERY-HE WAS REINTERRED IN THE CATHOLIC CEMETERY ACROSS THE ROAD 20 OR SO YEARS AGO AFTER THE CHURCH REINSTATED HIM), PAUL MILLER (FOOTBALL COACH-HIS SON, BILL, AND I MET IN THE 80’S AT CHURCH), ALLEN SWICK (BASKETBALL COACH AND VICE PRINCIPAL-HIS SON, TODD, HAS WORKED FOR US FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS)

  9. Dave Hill says:

Jim Walsh, POD teacher, talked to us about the Balkans. He liked to go to Yugoslavia for summers on the Adriatic. He also taught us about Albania, then the most closed nation in the world. Sometime shortly after he passed away I went and visited Albania (I’ve been there three times. I remember Jim whenever I talk to my Albanian friends. I had dinner with Jim every time I was in Washington after high school. I wish I could have told him about my Albania adventures.

I heard about Dorothy Butts suicide while on ‘cruise’ in the South China Sea in ’64 or ’65. A note about it was in a ship’s newsletter because she had some connection with some Navy official. Miss Butts and Mr. Walsh were my favorite teachers. They were both so kind to me, a very ‘average’ student.

  10. Pam Stotlar Cook says:

50 years!! That means we are really and truly old — like our parents. Although from the energy in the room at our reunion dinner, we don’t act like it.

It has been a pleasure to work on all of our reunions over the years. The 50th was by far the best, in no small part due to your hard-working committee, especially Jim Walker for the fabulous video he put together and the music of our time that he played all evening at a level so everyone could visit. Carol Crawford Rudolph and her husband, Bill, provided the clever, festive centerpieces. Joyce Fresh Neumark kept the committee on track coordinating all classmate contact information, ordering the reunion favors, collecting all reunion payments, and being a fantastic emcee for the evening. Eve Cutler Church and her daughter Dani did a great job creating and hosting our class website — a huge contribution to our large attendance.

During the school tour, one of the students said “our” cow escapade is widely thought of as the best prank ever!! Who knew that 50 years later what Art, George, Pete, and Gary created would be so famous. Well done guys!

  11. Joseph Davidson says:

Please me posted for any future events. This reunion was great! Thanks for all your hard work!

  12. Rolf hill says:

Class of ’63 did such a good job, we just had to touch it up before WE graduated. Sorry to hear it was removed. How long did it last?

    • Eve Church says:

      Which class were you in?

    • Eve Church says:

This happened about ten years ago, I’m told. I was told that painting over Moo was a mistake; the principal forgot to tell the painters NOT to cover Moo. He and the entire school were not happy when they saw it.

  13. Jim Otting says:

    One more time,
A large thanks to the team that put the reunion together.
My wife was really pleased with the presentation and the surroundings. Vinny LoPresti and I picked up right where we left off as true friends do after 50 years.
    Thanks, and best to all,
    Jim Otting

  14. Pam Rudden White says:

Thank you for putting together a great video of the 50th WJ 1963 class reunion. Even tho I wasn’t able to make the event I felt like I shared a little of it with all of you. You guys did a great job and it was very appreciated. Thanks again. Perhaps I will be able to make the next one?!
